About the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Sequence

On the 6th of February 2023, two high-magnitude earthquakes struck the Kahramanmaraş region, in the Republic of Türkiye. The Mw=7.8 and 7.5 events were both left-lateral strike-slips along the East Anatolian fault, and were followed by thousands of aftershocks. They resulted in more than fifty thousand deaths in the Republic of Türkiye and Syrian Arab Republic, where local roads and buildings were severely damaged. Clear ionospheric signals from the night-time magnitude 7.8 earthquake can be seen, for example, in the links between station BSHM and GPS52 or R859 at 0130 UTC. The day-time magnitude 7.5 earthquake also generates an ionospheric signal at 1040 UTC, for example in NICO-C204M, E211, C010I, or GPS53.
